dugout canoe

SOUTH AMERICA - 20TH CENTURY

This is a superb native dugout canoe, with a wonderful worn patina. Although dugout canoes such as these are used throughout the world by different ethnic groups and tribes, stylistically this one is remarkably similar those used by the 'River People' of the Congo basin in Central Africa, Amazonian children in South America and also the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. The small size would not be suitable for an average adult, unless by the Ba'Aka, BaKa, BaMbuti, Efe and other related groups of the Congo—often referred to as Pygmies, as they are much smaller in stature.... or by children, such as the ones used by children in Amazon rain forest or the Solomon Islands. Although we might never know for certain, it's my belief that the shape and depth is more like the ones used in South America or the South Pacific, rather than the Congo where they appear wider and shallower. I have attached some example pictures for you to make your own judgment. Either way, it's a remarkable piece of cultural beauty and is great fun to research.
