fairground elephant
FRANCE - 20TH CENTURY
This is a fantastic life sized baby elephant, constructed from a wooden frame that was then covered in Hessian, then Gesso and Plaster and then painted. There seems to be what can only be described as "bullet holes" all over it which suggests it may have been used as a shooting target at a fairground or circus. It may have also been used for one of the dramatic French parades. However it still remains a mystery. Either way, it makes for an amazing display piece due to the sheer scale and charm of it.
