kanji woodblocks
JAPAN - MEIJI PERIOD
This is a beautiful collection of late 19th Century Meiji period woodblocks that we obtained from a Buddhist statue collector in Kyoto, Japan. These were used in a temple to print onto paper or scrolls. The kanji characters have a fantastic age stained patina, from years of use with ink and can now be appreciated as works of art in their own right.
Two of the blocks mention "Yakushi Nyorai" the main deity of the shrine, who is the Buddha that offers medicine to suffering people. The long block is carved with the name of the Kyoto Gion Shrine and commemorates the construction of one of the 88 Shikoku Shrines, the small block is marked with the words "Shikoku 88 Shojo Worship".
Largest - 29cm H
