tavern settle

tavern settle

ENGLAND - 19TH CENTURY

A charming Cornish tavern settle with a fantastic naturally bleached appearance. Settles have been made for centuries, originally to keep the draft from old medieval buildings off your back, then later for use in taverns and pubs next to open fires to keep the heat in your nook, whilst enjoying a pint or two. Although some settles can be highly decorative and ornate, this simply constructed pine settle is an excellent example of vernacular English furniture at its best. In good honest condition, structurally sound, with a wonderfully worn and aged patina.

148cm H x 154cm W x 41cm D
